This season, the Vancouver based Wings + Horns collaborated with Adidas Originals. Creating a line that was inspired by Japanese shadow theory and an attribute to darkness.
“IN DARKNESS THERE IS A SENSE OF DEPTH AND SHIFT IN TONE, PLACING EMPHASIS ON NUANCE AND DETAIL”.
Because darkness takes away the sense of sight, texture and feel of fabrics are also vital elements seen throughout the line.
All of these themes are presented in pieces like the Insulated Bomber, which has a mixture of diamond and combat quilting and the signature fading stripes embroidered on the sleeves. The Wings + Horns design process is all in the details and the brand is always looking to push new fabric development and manufacturing techniques.
Wings and Horns designer, Tung Vo, says the collaboration with Adidas Originals was about “honing in on the Adidas iconic sportswear heritage with the Wings & Horns attention to detail and craftsmanship”. The result is a combination of very wearable pieces that are also visually intriguing. Taking the inspiration of darkness into the colour palette, most of the line is made up of dark grays and blacks, offset with the light colours. The designs are subtle and classic mixed with modern materials and silhouettes giving the collection a clean and sharp aesthetic. Vo aims to create “premium product with elevated details”.
As an interesting addition to the launch of the new collection, twelve hand knit kimonos bearing the Adidas logo were installed in select retail locations around the world. This includes the Wings + Horns show room in Vancouver, Bloomingdale’s in Soho, and Sneakers N’ Stuff in Paris. The large display was a perfect example of the uniqueness of thought, diligence and hard work that goes into creating a collection that appeals to streetwear lovers.
The launch event was held at the Wings + Horns show room with the fashion-forward mingling, drinking local beer and checking out the new line. The collection launched online and in over 50 different global retailers on September 8th, 2016. You can find the line at the Wings + Horns at 133, West 5th Avenue, Haven in Gastown and Nordstrom in downtown Vancouver.
