Carsharing not only compliments an ecofriendly lifestyle, but can be a great alternative for those – who love to drive or must drive for business – as opposed to owning a vehicle. If you like to walk, bike or transit around town and only need a car for occasional trips to Value Village, IKEA, to run errands, these five companies offers the perfect solution. Having a convenient alternative to owning a vehicle should inspire those who are currently driving and maintaining a vehicle to look at their options – in both costs and convenience.
Surely everyone have seen these little white and blue Smart Cars parked and being driven all over downtown. There are over 700 of them spread across Vancouver, North Vancouver and Horseshoe Bay. If you take frequent trips to Vancouver Island, Car 2 Go is your best option. Cars can be accessed easily through the website or the app, and pick up the nearest one without a reservation. Cars do not need to be returned to their original place which makes it super convenient if you do not know how long you will be or if you are staying somewhere over night. As another great perk, Car 2 Go recently launched North American roaming, which means you can drive and use your membership card in 14 cities across North America, including Seattle and Portland.
Established in 1997, Modo was the first carshare in North America. They have a range of different vehicles from trucks, vans and convertibles depending on your preference. Modo is a two-way carsharing system, meaning every vehicle has a designated spot for pickup and drop off. Gas, insurance, maintenance and Lower Mainland bridge tolls are included with the membership along with perks such as discounts with HitchPlanet, YMCA and City of Vancouver recreational centres.
Zipcar is one of the largest carsharing companies in the world. With a wide selection of cars in Vancouver and across the globe, this company is great if you are a frequent traveler. Drivers can choose from a compact, to a pick-up truck, to an unbranded luxury car. Simply reserve the car of your choice in advance by hour or by day, and pick it up at its home location. Cars used must be returned to the original spot, but there are so many all over Vancouver, it is easy to find one close to you.
Evo is a great carsharing company for taking on everything BC has to offer. The four-door cars have enough room for five people, plenty of cargo space, and bike and ski racks, making it perfect to take in the Whistler Film Festival or to the Gulf Islands. It is also extremely affordable. You only pay for what you use; and the per-minute rate includes gas, insurance, parking and up to 200km/trip. Evo cars and parking homes can be found easily all over Vancouver using the website locator or the mobile app.
If a bicycle has become your favourite method of transportation, or you just need to grab one for a nature ride around the Seawall, the newly launched bikeshare company, Mobi is what you are looking for. Mobi stations have popped up all over downtown Vancouver and Kitsilano. By the time the launch is complete there will be 1,500 bicycles at 150 stations, available 24 hours a day. All you need to do is register online, find a bike and enter your pin and then return it to any bike rack station when you are done. It works exactly the same as a carshare company, just for bikes instead. Each bike comes with a complimentary hair net and helmet.
DRIVE, SHARE, REPEAT!
Carsharing is an affordable, convenient and ecofriendly way to have a vehicle on hand without the expense and greatly reduces your environmental footprint . As someone who lives downtown and primarily walks to all my destinations, I have found carsharing to be an extremely helpful way to grab a car when I find myself in need of a vehicle. It is great way to pick up a friend from the airport, take a day trip and do big grocery hauls. Love the convenience!
